Skadar Lake - landmark national park Montenegro, located in the east, in the valley of the Zeta-Skadar, that not far from the border with Albania (on the territory of the latter is 1/3 of the entire lake). Skadar Lake is the largest not only in Montenegro, but also on the Balkan Peninsula - the territory it occupies about 475 square kilometers Most of the lake is now swampy coast.

It is believed that the lake is above a bay of the Adriatic Sea. However, the freshwater lake and its reservoir is replenished through Crnojevic river, Moraca and other smaller.

The nearest town - the village of Virpazar, which was founded in 1242. In the Middle Ages it was a key trading center, which contributed to its geographical position. Also, the village has got one of the first postal station.

The climate here is typically Mediterranean, which is caused by the close proximity of the Adriatic Sea. For this climate is characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot summers. The water temperature in the lake can reach a maximum level of 27 degrees.

Historically, on the shores of the lake lived Slavic tribes, but with the advent of Christianity there were built several Orthodox monasteries (Vranino to 1233, Beska, Starcevo, Moracnik et al.). Also to this day, the ruins of castles, built in the period of confrontation between the Turkish intervention: the remains of the former capital of Zabljak (which was then transferred into Cetinje), fortresses and Grmozhur Lesendro which were built in the XIII-XIX centuries.

Flora and fauna of the coast of the lake is rich in unique species. Here are a few types of fish found in the lake: carp, gray mullet, bleak, rudd, salmon, roach. On the shores of the lake can be seen at least 260 species of birds: ducks, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, herons and others. Some species of birds that live here are rare, such as black or ibis Dalmatian pelican - found only here, in the area of ​​Skadar Lake.

In addition, on the shores of the lake you can see the overgrown water lilies and roses, and on one of the islands is a place where herring gulls nest - it is the largest in Montenegro.
