National Museum Reina Sofia Art Centre is dedicated to contemporary art, and together with the Prado and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum is part of the famous "Golden Triangle of Art" in Madrid.
The museum was founded in 1986 and initially it served as a center for the exhibition of sculpture exhibitions. Its official opening took place on the royal couple in 1992. The museum occupies the building, which formerly housed the Hospital San Carlos. This building was built in the 18th century the famous Spanish architect Francisco Sabatini, at the end of the 20th century it was renovated several times in order to adapt its facilities to house museum collections here.

Royal Decree, which was released in May 1988, awarded the Reina Sofía National Museum status.
