St. Nicholas Church belongs to the oldest monuments of architecture of Ukraine and is the oldest monumental architecture in Lviv. The temple is the best characterizes the ancient Russian architecture. The first documentary evidence of it relates to 1292, which was confirmed by excavations in 1977. It is believed that the church was used Galician prince as a family tomb. In the late 15th century, the church freed from paying taxes, and in the mid-16th century parish granted "Eurydice." This meant that the population of the parish was subject to the government and the court of the church, not the castle, as it was before.

1544 was marked by the foundation of the church Nicholas Orthodox Brotherhood containing school and a shelter for the poor. A fire in 1623 caused great damage to the church. In 1772 the church was rebuilt a second time, but in 1800, burned again. Therefore, the original construction of the 13th century are preserved only the foundations and the lower half of the walls, because they were composed of hewn limestone blocks.

At the heart of the cross-shaped plan of the church is a square nave with elongated semicircular apse. The West Wing - the rectangular porch and north and south - the chapel with a rounded apse. Dome completion decorated lanterns crown the altar and the nave. Simple and austere appearance of the sanctuary, eloquent pyramidal composition of fragmented volumes allow to carry the temple to a number of unique creations of the Galician school of architecture.

Visit the temple of today can not only admirers and lovers of medieval architecture, but also all those who seek union with God. The solemn and full of special flavors atmosphere that prevails here, gives joy to the soul and calm the body.
