The only landmark Gothic Cathedral of Lviv is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded in 1360, designed by architect Peter Shtehera. His first master builder was Lviv Nicholas Nitschke, and the foundation stone of the shrine was founded by the Polish king Casimir the Great.
For centuries, the temple greatly changed from the outside, the interior has changed also. But the sanctuary of the church was preserved until today without changes. In 1527 the cathedral was badly damaged by fire. During the restoration of the Cathedral of Lviv in 1760-1780 under the project of Peter Poleyovskogo Gothic forms were replaced by Baroque. It was planned that the church will have two towers, but only one was built on the north side. The fate of the chapels was different: one was dismantled, while others, in particular, Kampians, Boim, as well as part of the chapel with the image of Ian Domagalicha and bas-relief, which depicts a family Domagalichey, remain intact. The frescoes on the walls and arches of the church painted by Stanislav Stroinski. The sculpture to the altars performed Poleyovsky Matthew Francis and Jan Ovidzky Olendzky. At the end of the XIX century church is enriched with stained glass windows, made the project Megoffera and Joseph Stanislaw Batovska.
Written in 1598 Josef Scholz Zhirinovsky icon of the Mother of God of Mercy - "Belle Star goroda Lviv" it was placed in 1765 on the main altar of the Cathedral of Lviv. In front of this icon of Polish King Jan Kazimierz in 1656 he gave a solemn oath by electing the Mother of God Queen of Poland.
Today the cathedral has eight chapels, famous of which - Kampians chapel, which is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture and is particularly valuable.
