The small resort town of Lindos is located on the southeast coast of the island of Rhodes, one of the most picturesque and interesting in terms of architecture cities of the island.
One of the most interesting sights of the Acropolis of Lindos when considered old Orthodox Church of the Virgin, which is located almost in the center of the city. Temple was built in the XIII century on the foundations of an ancient religious building. Since its construction was repeatedly reconstructed Church of Our Lady, also added some extensions. The greatest changes in the appearance of the temple were made 1489-90-ies. Repair and reconstruction of the church were carried out on the orders of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John Pierre Aubusson.
The church is a cross-domed church with an octagonal dome, white walls and a red tile roof. The most striking difference is the high stone church bell tower. The church is surrounded by high walls, and its courtyard is paved with a mosaic of black and white pebbles.
The decoration of the church is an ancient carved wooden iconostasis, which dates from the 17th century. From the ceiling hangs a huge bronze chandelier with candlesticks. The walls and vaulted ceiling of an Orthodox church is decorated with beautiful frescoes, the oldest of which dates from 1637 year. Most of the frescoes dates from the late 18th century. It is work of the famous artist Gregory Simi depicting scenes from the life of Mary, Jesus and the saints.
