Leipzig Opera began life back in 1693, becoming the third theater in Europe, along with similar cultural facilities in Venice and Hamburg. Despite the fact that the Leipzig Opera does not have its own orchestra, it is actively cooperating with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, since 1766, and that it helps in the production of various masterpieces of theater.

The opening of the opera house was a grand event not only for the residents of Leipzig, but also far beyond. With the 40-ies of the XVIII century are regularly held with the participation of various performances of Italian opera soloists and ensembles, touring through Germany. In the XIX century the number of dissatisfied public has increased significantly, which was due to the fact that the choice of the repertoire of the Leipzig Opera engaged ignorant people in this business. This has resulted in an unfortunate rental system operation theater, from which refused in 1912.

The emergence of talented theater Intendant M. Martershtayga was the beginning of a new stage in the development of opera in Leipzig. Eight years later - in the early 20-ies of the last century - in this famous scene staged productions of contemporary authors, which has increased in popularity and attendance of this cultural institution.

During the war, the Leipzig Opera was completely destroyed, but in 1956 embarked on its reconstruction. As a result of the construction work in 1960, the opening of the renewed opera, which represented not only the largest, but also a truly beautiful and modern building in the GDR. With the staging of Wagner began a new creative way of collective theater.

Today, Leipzig Opera is very popular, it is visited every year a huge number of local residents and visitors. Tickets for the performances are usually purchased for a few months.
