Today, a large clock tower of La Rochelle is a museum of archeology, and the bell in its belfry and watch perform their functions almost as regularly as three centuries ago, when they were set upon it.
The tower, also called the gateway to Grosse Horloge, was built in the XII century as a part of the city wall that separates the port area and residential neighborhoods. Just outside the gates of the quarter began Parr, the title of which soon became known as the locals and the tower. At the bottom of the tower housed the gate: more - for the medieval transport, smaller - for pedestrians. Each opening was made in the form of an arch, but during the reconstruction in the second half of the XVII century, two openings are combined into one.
Bell tower and clock appeared on the tower near the end of the XV century, however, those bell and clock, which visitors can see today, were established in the middle of the XVIII century, when the former bell tower was demolished and replaced with a more modern structure, built in the fashion of the time Louis XV. That is why the image of the tower are clearly visible and the features of a defensive structure (the lower part of the tower), and a more elegant secular building (top), decorated with sculptures, symbols of military affairs and science.
Grosse Horloge Gate are close to the promenade du Perret, near the old harbor. In the Middle Ages had a port for La Rochelle importance in maritime trade, and the years of various wars. Today, the Old Port has a harbor for large ships and yachts, as well as a dry dock. The old harbor has always attracted the attention of visitors to the city - apart from Grosse Horloge is located, and other famous landmarks - Tower chain, St. Nicholas and four sergeants. The museum, located in a large clock tower, often hosts spectacular reconstruction of historical events.
