Previously, the town of Kroměříž was surrounded by high walls, for which you can get through it was one of the three city gates. Unfortunately, in our time, survived only one of them, called the Mill. Two others - Water and Blacksmith - were destroyed in the late XIX century.
Mill gates used to control the road leading to the mint master's mill and a brewery. Through them, often transported beer barrels in the estate, which were outside the city. These gates have always been protected. There were on duty day and night, representatives of the Episcopal Guard.
Previously the mill gate façade, this grand, imposing buildings, was the frescoes, which can be judged by the only surviving fragment of the upper part of the tower. Local historians believe that these murals were executed during the reign of Bishop Liechtenstein-Kastelkorna after the Thirty Years War. At the same time it has been restored many ruined buildings in the city.
Commemorative inscription on the gate and made a Latin chronogram - text in which letters are taken as Roman numerals, folding on a specific date. Year, which is encrypted in the chronogram at the mill gate, - in 1665.
In the XIX century the gates were rebuilt, and in the neighboring building with a gate was made for the passage of pedestrians, as more frequent accidents related to the carts and cars. The result of this reconstruction we see now.
The gate decorated with a green roof, look unusual and remind us of the past centuries, when the city Kromeriz compact and cozy.
