One of the most fascinating tourist attractions in southern Norway is a trip on an old steam train that runs along the railway between stations Grovan Setesdalbanen and Rёyknas.
The route, stretching 78 kilometers, was opened for use in November 1896., Connecting with Biglandsfordom Kristiansand. The operation of this means of communication has opened up the world picturesque scenery plain that was once extremely difficult to access. Moreover, the plain was rich in minerals and other natural resources. Thus, the railway Setesdalbanen played an important role for the industry: on it transports wood, feldspar, aluminum, etc.
In 1938. Setesdalbanen was combined with a new line of railway communication (Sёrlandsbanen), resulting in Grovan station became the center of freight and passenger traffic. However, began after the Second World War "boom" on personal vehicles has led to the fact that in 1962. the authorities were forced to stop operation of the line.
Currently Setesdalben operates only in the summer as a tourist route, during which you can enjoy the beautiful untouched landscapes. Most of the road with hairpin turns, tunnels, bridges, lies parallel to the river Otra.
The revival of this line was made possible thanks to the work of volunteers, who did not want to Setesdalben, the last Norwegian narrow gauge railway, became the forgotten part of history. Because of the number of enthusiasts and recruited staff to service the route.
