Folk Art Museum - one of the main attractions of the Greek city of Komotini (the capital of the administrative region of East Macedonia and Thrace). It was founded in 1962 and is administered by the Cultural Association of Komotini.
Since 1989, the Folk Art Museum is located in a beautiful two-story mansion, formerly owned by the family of Peydis. Specially for this purpose the building was renovated and today is a perfect example of the traditional architecture of the region. In addition to the two main floors, well equipped exhibition space on the ground floor in the courtyard.
Excellent collection of the Museum of Folk Art is perfectly illustrates the development of the history and culture of Thrace, as well as the life and traditions of the locals. The exhibits presented in the museum were collected not only in modern Greek Thrace (in history known as the Western Thrace), but also in Eastern and Northern Thrace (now Turkey and Bulgaria, respectively), as well as imported from Asia Minor lands.
Visitors can see traditional clothes, handmade lace, embroidery, jewelry, musical instruments, copper, wood, clay and silver. Presented in the museum and household utensils, furniture, tools and a variety of devices (including agricultural tools and the old loom) and much more.
A special place in the exposition of the Museum of Folk Art took personal belongings native Komotini - Archbishop Chrysanthos of Athens. However, no less interest and a unique icon of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, St. Anne, and the prophets, dating from the 18th century, silver shrine (early 19th century) and other church relics.
