St. John the Baptist Church of the tenth century - the oldest in Eastern Europe Ground Christian church, which has been preserved and is still in effect. According to legend, the temple set on the spot where the Apostle Andrew preached, who founded here the first Christian community. In 1999, archaeologists discovered here the ancient image of the Christian cross, dating from the end of I - beginning of the II century.
This is a small, elegant, built in Byzantine style church with a unique dome on a high drum. Massive walls are made of alternating bands, consisting of white stone blocks and red brick. Body temple supported by four dark gray marble columns, preserved from an ancient temple. On the west side was attached stone bell tower middle of XIX century.
In the 80s it was reconstructed church building. Written restoration project - architect EI Dopushinskaya. Church returned to the lost look of a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, and by 1990, it has again become active.
