Kem District Local History Museum "Pomorie" was established in 1980 on the initiative of the head of the culture department of OI Smolkovoy and collaborator of the magazine "Soviet Belomorie" VS Barkin. "History of the region from ancient times to the present day" - was the name of the first exhibition of the museum opened, which was devoted to the anniversary celebration - the 60th anniversary of the Karelian Labour Commune. Initially the museum base consisted of 80 items that tell about the way of life of coast-dwellers, as well as documentary evidence and historical records of the Karelian Pomerania. All of this was transferred to the museum of local lore IF Semenov. Over time, the museum joined other historical exhibits such as household tools, objects made of birch bark and traditional arts and crafts, fishing tackles.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the city in 1985. Kem museum moved to a historic building of the Treasury of the Solovetsky Monastery, built in 1763. Its new name - "Pomorie", the museum received in 1991. Municipal institutions Kem History Museum began in 2006.

According to recent reports in the museum are more than 10,000 historical objects. More than 7,500 exhibits of the main fund and 2,700 scientific auxiliary fund. These include scripts dedicated Pomor culture, the Old Believers relics, objects of copper and a variety of household items: chests, samovars, kitchenware, irons and unique photographs, which keeps a history of the northern edge of Russia.
