In the city of Kastoria on the top of a hill, where once an ancient Byzantine Acropolis, in a modern building located a magnificent Byzantine Museum. His collection is a unique collection of post-Byzantine icons and Byzantine, which date from the XII-XVII centuries. The museum also presents works of sculpture, mosaics, murals, manuscripts, coins and much more.

Byzantine Museum was founded in 1989. The museum's collection is kept about 700 icons, which were gathered from the Byzantine and post-Byzantine multiple churches in Kastoria. Almost all of them have been restored museum workers. The collection is divided into six parts according to the date of manufacture and workshop. Most of the unique collection made by local workshops Macedonia, but there are also works of the Cretan icon painting school, and masterpieces imported from the Ionian Islands and Venice. The permanent exhibition presents only 35 icons, while the rest is stored in the museum.

Among the most important and valuable icons stands out the icon of Prophet Elias, which dates back to the XII century and is made in Komninskom style. Of particular value is, and the icon of St. Nicholas, also referring to the XII century. Interesting icons of Christ Pantocrator (XIV century), Saints Cosmas and Damian (XIV century), Descent from the Cross (XIV century), Our Lady of Odigitria (XVI century) and the icon of Christ Pantocrator (XVI century, Cretan School). Also in the display are altar doors depicting scenes of the Annunciation (XV century) - a fine example of a local workshop (school Kastoria).

During Byzantine rule Kastoria was quite powerful and influential city, which could not affect its history and culture. Today, the unique collection of Byzantine Museum is considered one of the richest and most comprehensive such collections in the world.
