A characteristic feature of the city is the large number of Byzantine churches - more than 50. Many churches are historical monuments such as the church of Panagia Kumbelediki the XI century. Its name comes from a non-traditional high dome. The church taxiarch (XIII century), painted on the outside, buried a national hero Pavloss molasses, who fought with the Greeks and Bulgarians.
Many churches are very small - a former homes chapel. Most of them are open to the visit, but interesting to see and the outside. The icons of the churches are kept in the Byzantine Museum (which is sometimes called the Archaeological).
