One of the most recognizable symbols of the city of Kaliningrad is considered building Koenigsberg Cathedral, located in the historic center Kneiphof on an island surrounded by the river Kant Pregol. Small picturesque island with a major architectural landmark in our days immersed in greenery and is connected to the mainland by two bridges.

First Cathedral of Koenigsberg was built in the thirteenth century in the south-western part of the Altstadt (near the settlement of German colonists). In 1327 it released a new site for the construction of a capacious main temple on the island fortress of Konigsberg Kneiphof (now - the island of Kant). The first documented mention of the cathedral dates back to sentyabrёm 1333, when Master of the Teutonic Order Lyutger approved the continuation of the construction of the magnificent building. The material for the construction of the new church were the bricks Altshtadtskogo cathedral, and to transport them to the island were built temporary bridges and gates, called Conciliar. Bridge, who served nearly fifty years, was dismantled, and the temporary gate in the city wall Altstadt successfully stood up to the bombing of the Second World War (over six years). In 1335, the cathedral was consecrated in honor of the Body of Christ.

Until the sixteenth century religious building was the main Catholic church of the city. Later the cathedral and the altar of the temple functioned as the burial place of representatives of the upper hierarchy. For five hundred years, the building of the cathedral was rebuilt, to amend and supplement the interior: in 1380-1400, the church was completely painted with frescoes in 1553 were added to the facades of the tower, one of which was set weathervane mermaid, and the western part of the nave was built housing , in 1640 in one of the towers were installed to watch the fight, and in 1695 appeared the body. In the 1520s the neighborhood is being built Albertina University building and the church is functioning as a university. The last in the cathedral crypt for university professors has found peace of Immanuel Kant.

During World War II Königsberg cathedral was badly damaged, and in the postwar years was a ruin. From demolition in Soviet times, religious building saved the tomb of the philosopher Kant. Since 1960, the building is an architectural monument (republican values), but no restoration work there was not made until the 1990s. In 1989 the building of the former Cathedral was included in the UNESCO list of World Cultural Site.

Today Königsberg Cathedral is a cultural and religious center. In the restored building houses: the Orthodox and Evangelical chapel, museum and the museum of the Cathedral of Immanuel Kant. Regularly in Königsberg Cathedral concerts of religious and classical music, held International Organ Competition.
