Oprtalj - charming and picturesque town situated on a hill above the valley of the Mirna River, opposite Motovun. This medieval town, which resembles many medieval town in Tuscany.
City Oprtalj was connected with Trieste and Poreč due railroad called Parenzana was built to develop the continental part of Istria. In 1935, the Italian government decided to redirect the way to Africa, were long the construction work, but the road has not been redirected.
The first mention of Oprtalj, as the residence of the feudal lords and craftsmen dates back to 1102 year. For tourists, the city has many interesting monuments. For example, the Church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 15th century. In its interior frescoes, dating from the 1471 year. Venetian Loggia, built in 1797 in the Renaissance style. On the building is still preserved the arms of Roman and Venetian eras. Also of interest is Cathedral of St. George, built here in 1526. The altar of the cathedral was built in 16-17 centuries., And the body is currently installed inside dates back to the 18th century.
Church of St. Helena is located in the south of the city. It was built in the 15th century on a small hill and is therefore a nice visible from the nearby road. On the walls of the church are still preserved Glagolitic inscriptions, dating back to 1496 year.
In Oprtalj there are several historic buildings that testify to its glorious past, but many of them are in need of reconstruction.
