In the early twentieth century, a boom in the industry production of ammonium nitrate used as a fertilizer in agriculture and for the preparation of explosives. In the first decades of the twentieth century the development and growth of the city of Iquique is mainly due to significant advances in the treatment of nitrate, which is exported to various countries in Europe. Astoreka Palace was built in 1904 on the orders of a prosperous merchant Don Juan Hyginus Astoreka as a business office. This project is embodied in the life of two well-known architect - Alberto Cruz Montt and Miguel Retornano. Juan Hyginus Astoreka died before finishing the construction of the house, and his family moved to the city of Valparaiso. In 1909, his wife, Felicia Farm, sold the palace Astoreka municipality of Iquique. Since then, the walls of this building were not placed offices until 1977. The building is constructed entirely of Oregon pine.
