On the peninsula of Halkidiki, 24 km from the city lie the ruins of ancient Polygyros Olinfosa - one of the most famous and influential policies of ancient Greece.
A small settlement existed here as far back as the Neolithic period, but eventually it was abandoned. Ancient Olinfos was founded in the 7th century BC Soon the city was occupied by Thracian captivity Botin. In 479 BC, Olinfos captured and thoroughly destroyed the troops the Persian king Xerxes, led by commander Artabazus I. After the retreat of the Persians the city was virtually rebuilt on the principle of so-called "grid plan" where the streets intersect each other exactly perpendicular, thereby forming a regular rectangular blocks.
Its political weight and the enormous impact Ancient Olinfos acquired, becoming the head of the union of Chalcis, and the Peloponnesian War was on the side of Sparta. Subsequently, under the control of Olynthus fell and some cities in Eastern Macedonia, and later the capital of the Macedonian kingdom - Pella. The rapid growth of Chalcis Union and its power Sparta became unprofitable, resulting in 382 BC It began a three-year protracted war. In 379 BC, Chalcis Union was dissolved, but only formally. The next few decades Olinfos remained the most influential city of Halkidiki. Complex political games between Athens, Chalcis Union and Macedonia led to a new war in the year 348 Olinfos was captured by the troops of the Macedonian king Philip II and completely destroyed. Chalcis Union ceased to exist, and the more ancient Olinfos never recovered.
To this day many well preserved ruins of buildings of the ancient city as the archaic and classical periods, as well as traces of a Neolithic settlement. Of particular interest is a unique floor mosaic of river pebbles, has high artistic value.
