Museum 'Statues of the sea' is situated in the seaside area of The Hague. It was opened in 1994 by collectors Theo and Lida Scholten. It is the only museum in the Netherlands, which specializes only in sculpture.
The museum houses a modern sculpture, like the Netherlands and overseas. Three times a year (sometimes more often) the curators of the museum organize in the main hall of the museum a new exhibition. It can be both thematic exhibition and the exhibition of the sculptor. The museum's mission is to "through various forms and materials to express the feelings and emotions of man."
Since 2004, the museum is located in a building Sculpture Institute, a research institute dealing with the problems of modern sculpture. The opening hours of the museum, visitors can use the library of the institute.
The museum building itself deserves special attention. It was built by architect Wim Quist. Before giving permission for the construction, the municipality of The Hague has put forward the demand: "the Museum should not be seen from the dunes." Therefore, almost the entire museum is underground, with terraces on the surface of the dunes, which are also not visible in the distance. The museum also is not visible from the boulevard, and the roof of the museum you can see the sea, but can not see any of the boulevard or the beach of Scheveningen. As a result, the museum is very difficult to find, even though it leads to the signs. The building of concrete and glass is located on several levels, the light comes from different places. Part of the museum exhibition is located in the open air (in bad weather visitors give raincoats). The museum has a cafe and a bookstore.
In 2004-2010 on the boulevard was the outdoor garden of sculptures by American artist Tom Otternessa. Funny figurines particularly delighted children.
