The monastery and the church of the Dominicans in the district of San Sebastião, is part of the district of Braga in the municipality of Guimarães.
Guimaraes is considered the cradle of Portugal, as at the time he became the first capital of the newly formed kingdom of Portugal, and was the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. Furthermore, Guimarães is famous for being the birthplace of the famous poet and dramatist Gil Vicente.
Guimaraes, the old town has many historical monuments, among which worth mentioning, and Dominican Monastery. According to some unconfirmed reports, this ancient monastery was built in the late XVI century, by the prayers of the martyr Sebastian. Therefore, the monastery and the church is in honor of the saint. There is another assumption that the monastery was founded by a monk Sebastian of the Dominican monastery in Viana do Castelo.
The building we see today relates to the architecture of the XVIII century. The monastery is the church of St. Sebastian, built in 1734. Inside the church one nave, it attracts the attention of visitors to the baroque organ, built in 1776, and the gilded altar and the altar of the twentieth century with the image of St. Sebastian.
