Clock tower height of 28 meters, is one of the main attractions of Graz. The first mention of the tower dates back to the year 1265, but its present appearance of the clock tower acquired in 1560.
Once on the mountain Schlossberg was a fortress, whose ruins can be seen today. The fortress housed the residence of the emperors since the early 15th century. Repeatedly tried to storm the fortress, however, only in 1809 Napoleon's troops blew it. The safety was only a clock tower.
Today the tower are three bells: hour bell, which is the oldest (1382), the bell that warns of fire, appeared in 1645. The third bell - bell sinners, for the first time rung in 1450, calling for the death penalty. Of great interest is the old original face, which at first had only one arrow indicating the clock. The minute hand came much later, and, short arrow shows exactly a minute, making it clear that they are as important as the hours of our lives.
The upper part of the tower is surrounded by a wooden gallery, which previously served as a vantage point of fire protection.
The tower, surrounded by a beautifully landscaped park is a favorite place for locals. There are walking with children, was dating and meet with friends. By the tower can be reached by cable car, but you can get up on their own at a very steep staircase. The ladder starts right from the Clock Tower and down the street Shporgasse to souvenir shops.
By the way, next to the clock tower is a monument to the dog. According to legend it was a barking dog rescued from abduction of the daughter of the emperor in 1481. Secretly steal the girl wanted to Matthias Corvinus, who the day before were denied marriage.
