Church of the Ascension in Gelendzhik - is the oldest building of the city, it has more than 100 years. The church was built in 1905-1909 gg. in Russian-Byzantine style.
In 1904 Gelendzhik village meeting, it was decided to build on the site of an old wooden bell tower of a new stone church. In 1905, after the approval of the project and cost estimates determined Grechkin contractor - a local farmer and the owner of the office building. The author of the project was made by the stone church architect Vasilyev. The interior of the church were painted Sarahtin. By the spring of 1909 the building of the Church of the Ascension was completed. In May 1909 he was consecrated Bishop of Sukhumi Dmitri.
In the post-revolutionary period of the Holy Ascension Church several times then closed, then reopened. In 1952 the building of the temple municipalised. In 1964, 1976 and 1982. City Executive Committee decides on the restoration and use of the church for cultural and educational purposes. In 1984 the church was handed over to the Museum of Local History, after which it began to carry out restoration work. In 1990, Ascension Church gave the Orthodox community and over time. its appearance has been completely restored.
Today the Church of the Ascension is an amazing beauty five-domed church with a large central dome, made in the form of an elongated cross, and three-tiered bell tower, located on the western porch. The church walls are of considerable strength and thickness, they were built of ancient brick and rough stone.
Holy Ascension parish church has two altars in honor of the high altar of the Ascension was consecrated twice - in 1909 and in 1993, the second altar was consecrated in honor of the Annunciation.
