Park "Balyang" is located on the banks of the Barwon River in the suburb of Newtown Geelong. The park, established in 1973, is full of stunningly beautiful lakes and ecologically valuable wetlands. Total area "Balyanga" - 81 thousand square meters. m.

Once this territory belonged to Captain Foster Fayansu, who bought it in 1845. He built the manor and called "Bellberd Balyang" in memory of a young Aboriginal boy, accompanied Captain in the early years foundation of Geelong. Earth used mainly for grazing, as were low-lying and prone to flooding. In 1959, the Town Council Newtown reserved this area for public park. But ten years later, then-owner of "Balyanga" agreed to sell their holdings.

In September 1970, it adopted a plan to build the park. Part of the work was carried out using the labor of the unemployed in the program to provide employment in rural areas. In August 1973, the park "Balyang" cost the city at $ 81, 5 thousand, was officially opened by the Mayor of Newtown, and representatives of the Government of Victoria.

The park smashed a large lake to a depth of 80 cm. In the middle of the lake there are three islands, two of which can be reached by a footbridge. Water is supplied to the lake from the reservoir for storm water and pumped out of the Barwon River. At the entrance arranged parking for 150 cars, toilets and information boards indicating the places for picnics. Several hiking and cycling paths connect "Balyang" with other park located on the banks of the Barwon River.

Today, in the park you can see several species of birds - swans, pelicans, Eurasian coot, dark partridge, Pacific black duck, mallard ducks, cormorants and gulls spotted. In 2007, the park held a series of restoration works, in particular removed the stone fences of the lake, to give it more similarity to a natural body of water.
