Art Gallery - the main cultural institution in the city of Geelong. Today, the gallery is stored in the funds of about 5000 pieces of art. The building is part of the Gallery of the Cultural District adjacent to the Geelong Performing Arts Center, the courthouse, the city library and cultural center.

In 1895, members of the League of Progress Geelong sent a petition to the State Government on the establishment of the city art gallery. Their request was granted in May 1900, when the Association of Art Galleries has received permission to use the three walls of City Hall for hanging paintings. Thus began the life of the gallery. Among the first acquisitions in the collection was a painting by Frederick McCubbin 1890 "The grave in the bush", bought for $ 210. Soon the gallery moved into the building a free library on Murabul Street.
