Zhoekvarskoe Gorge - one of the most amazing natural and historical sites of Old Gagra. The gorge is located in the western part of the city, near the Gagra fortress. The length of it is very large, ranging from Gagarin Square and to the source of the river Zhoekvara that high in the mountains.

Zhoekvarskoe Gorge was named in honor of the mountain river Zhoekvara. On the Abkhaz language its name means "12 springs". During ethnographic research were found leading to the ancient canyon trails. Rather, it is for these paths in ancient times up and down for the Caucasus "Spartans" (People Ubykhs).

Abaata Fortress, which was placed near the gorge, is constantly exposed to attacks Highlanders. Therefore, the military command of the fortress it was decided to completely cut down the forest around the place, where there was a single transition. In 1841 there was built a watchtower. It should be noted that the construction of the tower engaged in Danzas, who served at that time in Gagra shelf. In the historical literature watchtower listed as Marly Tower, which is associated with important battle of Russian history. The remains of a dilapidated guard tower can be seen today.

Zhoekvarskoe Gorge - this is a very interesting and beautiful place that attracts tourists with beautiful scenery, magnificent waterfalls and winding mountain river, dense thickets of boxwood, chestnut, yew and other exotic trees. Above the entrance to the gorge Zhoekvarskoe railroad passes, coming out of a tunnel and going to another. Also here is a railway station called "Gagra".
