Gagra Temple - this is one of the oldest buildings of the Republic of Abkhazia. It is located in the unique architectural monument - fortress Abaata. Gagra temple was erected in the VI-VII Art. First Caucasian Christians.

The last major restoration of the church took place in 1902. It was then restored the original look and shape of the church. The facade of the building was built of roughly hewn limestone blocks of small size and relatively simple form. In the side vestibule there is a secret door leading to the underground tunnel that runs under the entire fortress Gagra and out to the sea - it was one of the most strategically important in the time features. Gagra church was consecrated in the name of St. Hypatius, Bishop of Gagra. According to historical data, and according to historians, the relics of St. Hypatia buried in the walls of the church.

Externally the temple - a rectangular building with two outbuildings. By the main entrance to the temple leads Gagra path paved of polished limestone slabs on both sides it is decorated with tall cypress trees. The interior of the church looks even more severely. Home decoration on the wall of the church serves the Bolnisi cross. Above the entrance you can see the Maltese cross. Both of them were made by order of Oldenburg Princess - patron saint of the church.

Currently, the temple is located in the Gagra interesting museum Abkhaz weapons, which shows the tips of darts, flint ax, battle bracelets, bronze axes and daggers, antique shields, helmets, swords, medieval chain mail, helmets, swords, and more.
