Church and Convent of Our Lady of Mercy of Grasse is one of the most important monuments of religious architecture in the Renaissance style in the city of Evora.
Beautiful building of the monastery stands on the Largo da Graça. The monastery, where monks lived Augustinian Order, was founded in 1511. The monastery church was started in 1540 by order of King João III. Construction of the temple of the royal house engaged architect Miguel de Arruda. Also in the construction of this building he attended the famous French sculptor Nicolau de Shanteren.
Facade of the temple attracts attention for its unusual architectural design. In the corners of the pediment placed sculptural globes. And under them there are four pieces of granite with torches. Among the locals called these figures "Sons of Grasse." In 1834, when the religious orders were expelled from the country, the building of the monastery was given to the ownership of the state and turned into a barracks. This transformation has caused great damage to the monastery: the building fell into disrepair, many religious and artistic treasures have been lost forever, which was a huge loss for the art collection of the city. In 1884, the collapsed dome of the church, which was decorated with tiles depicting scenes from the life of St. Augustine. Unfortunately, none of the images are not survived. Altars, images and church bells of the church were moved to the church of the monastery of St. Francis.
In the second half of the twentieth century, the monastery began to recover, trying to preserve the original features of the building. Since 1910, the monastery of Nossa Senhora da Graça-listed monuments of national importance.
