Raby Castle is located in County Durham, England. The well-known noble family Neville settled in this place in the 13th century, and in the castle can be found the remains of the old fortifications, erected back in 1300. The very same castle was built by the third Baron Neville - John - in 1367-1390 years. In 1397, the son of John Neville Ralph received from King Richard II the title Earl of Westmoreland. This castle was born Cecily Neville, the mother of the future king of England - Edward IV and Richard III.
Neville adhered to Catholicism and supported the Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland. However, the uprising in 1569 against Queen Elizabeth was not successful, and all the land as punishment Neville became royal property. But after 43 years they bought Henry Vane, the first Earl of Darlington, who owns another castle in the same county of Durham. Around his previous castle - Barnard Castle - a bustling market town has grown, and the count was in need of another, more secluded residence.
In XVII-XVIII centuries the castle Raby often rebuilt and modernized: Chapel was converted since the Middle Ages, are equipped with an octagonal living room and entrance hall in the Gothic style. There were also carried out work, allowing owners to enter the lock on the carriage, but in doing so had damaged the original appearance of a medieval castle.
Raby Castle in the plan is an irregular polygon, and consists of nine towers, the main entrance is on the west side through the gates of the four-Neville. In the east wing of the castle is the main hall, also known as the Baron's Hall. The Donjon remained unchanged, and from the interior of the castle - the kitchen. The castle is surrounded by a park of 200 acres, which are home to deer.
Wayne family has acquired a huge number of paintings by famous painters such as Pieter de Hooch, Luca Giordano, Anthony van Dyck and Joshua Reynolds. These and many other paintings, mostly family portraits, are stored in the castle to the present day.
Currently Raby Castle is the residence of John Wayne, the 11th Baron Barnard. The castle is open to the public from May to September, as well as on Easter Day.
