Castle of Eger is located in the city center and a monolith towering over him. This medieval castle is one of the most prominent artifacts and monuments of Hungarian history, thanks to its heroic defense against the Turks in 1552.
Once close to Eger on a high hill located predecessor of the castle, which was destroyed in 1241 during the Mongol invasion, the Bishop of Eger decided to postpone the castle on a rocky hill in the city. In 1470, the Gothic palace was built. In 1552 the Turkish army as part of 35000-40000 soldiers laid siege to the castle, which numbered 2100-2300 defenders. The siege failed, and the Turks suffered heavy losses. Survived some 1,700 defenders. In 1596, after the second siege the Turks captured and destroyed the walls of the castle. In 1701 half the Austrians blew up the castle. Archaeological excavations began only in 1925, and the castle until 1957 was used as a military barracks.
Restoration of the castle took place in two stages. In the second half of the 1980s the government sponsored restructuring bastion, but it was not implemented until the adoption of the Szechenyi Plan in 2002-2005, when the major contribution was made by the government of county and township Eger
