Art Collection of North Rhine-Westphalia is located in Dusseldorf. The base of the museum dates back to 1960, when they were purchased 88 works by Paul Klee. They became the basis of the first collection, which was presented to the audience in 1961. The original location of the works was a beautiful castle Yegerhof, but over time it became so many exhibits that place in the palace was not enough.
In 1975, the leadership of the city, it was decided to expand the areas for exhibits. For this reason, it was a new building, designed by well-known specialists of the architectural bureau Düsseldorf. The emerging structure of arched facade was made of polished syenite dark. It has become a real symbol of the city immediately after its opening. In 1990, the collection was supplemented installations, sculptures and photographic works.
Art Collection of North Rhine-Westphalia - two of the museum. Museum titled "K20" presents visitors the art of XX century, it is based on the classic modernism. This is where the paintings by Klee, and the paintings of Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. Everyone can contemplate the work of the Dadaists, the Cubists, the Fauves, the Expressionists. Museum "K21" located under the dome of glass, contemporary works are presented here. For public displays works by Ilya Kabakov, Michelangelo Pistoletto and other famous artists.
The museum building has not always been the fairground. In the period of 1949-1988 years there was a parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. Only in 2002 it was carried out restoration of the building, where later and opened the famous exhibition.
