From built around the middle of the 14th century Castle of the Livonian Order in Dobel today remained only the ruins. According to historical chronicles, the construction of the castle began in 1335. The castle was built of stone for the needs of the Livonian Order. However, soon after the start of construction of the fortress, the construction was stopped and continued only in 1345.

It is believed that the site Dobele Castle in the early 13th century was a wooden fortress Semigallians. After the Crusaders captured the land that went to the Livonian Order, the territory on which stood a wooden castle was the perfect place for the construction of a new reference point. Especially that a wooden castle was by then already burned themselves Semigallians who retreated to Lithuania.

Dobele castle consisted of four buildings surrounding the courtyard. When the castle was also a chapel. On the west side, next to the tower is a quadrangular entrance gates.

Throughout its history, the castle has repeatedly been at the center of battles between the different forces. One of the most serious fighting occurred in 1620, in the battle Dobele Castle managed to capture the Swedish army of Gustavus Adolphus. In the period from 1643 to 1649. in the castle he lived the widow of the Duke Friedrich, Elizabeth Magdalena. Not passed Dobele Castle and the Great Northern War, during which the fortress once again become a place of battle. During this period in the castle a few days spent King Carl XII.

With lock connected not a legend. For example, until now it was not possible to detect underground tunnels. According to legend, one of them passed under the river Berze, and led her to the other shore, and the other went to the underground passage Lielberze.

Over the entire period of the Castle he was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. The complete desolation castle came in 1730. By the time he was so dilapidated that it had left. The roof collapsed, and since then the castle has not rebuilt.

Today, the walls of the castle are preserved, in order to prevent further damage. These works have started in 2001. Partially preserved fortress walls and walls of the church, which reach heights of 20 meters. The ruins of the castle are quite romantic place, this is one of my favorite places to photograph. It often hosts a variety of festivals and events.

It is believed that the castle hidden treasures. It often takes a mysterious and unexplained cases.

There is an interesting legend. Once the castle roof was copper. In sunny weather, blazing roof could be seen from afar. According to legend, the sailors, was on his way to Ventspils took blazing roof of the lighthouse, and focusing on it, smashed against the cliffs. This has happened more than once, and the sailors cursed copper roof. And one day, rising hurricane blew the roof into the sea.
