The bulk of the buildings included in the complex of the palace of the Dukes of Burgundy in Dijon, it was built in XVII-XVIII centuries, but in this architectural ensemble is and the earlier buildings. Each part of this complex represents the different stages in the life of the Duchy and its rulers.
The oldest of these is the Barska tower, which began to build in 1365 during the reign of Philip the Bold. In this tower housed the apartments of Philip, beautifully furnished and richly decorated. But there were times when the tower served as a prison for prisoners of noble birth. Another tower was built under Philip the Good, who ruled from Burgundy in 1419, and was therefore named after him. Its height is 52 meters.
Dijon Palace was the residence of the Dukes of Burgundy, and even became a kind of memorial to some of them. If the remains of Philip the Good rest in the Cathedral of Dijon, the tombs of Philip and Jean Valiant Intrepid stored in one of the halls of the palace - Hall of Guardians. Tombstones were moved to the palace of the former tomb of the Dukes of Burgundy in Shanmol monastery, founded in the XIV century by Philip Brave, who also was the founder of the duchy of Burgundy. Gravestones were made by the sculptor Claus Sluter, who was also the author of the decorations of the monastery buildings Shanmol.
Currently, the palace placed in the walls of the City Museum of Fine Arts, which was founded at the end of the XVIII century. And shortly before the opening of the museum in the palace housed Dijon School of Drawing. This is one of the oldest museums in France, which are stored in the collection of works of art, ranging from ancient Egyptian. Special mention deserves a rich collection of Flemish and French paintings.
