Cosenza Cathedral, named after Santa Maria Assunta, was built around the first half of the 11th century, although the exact date of its construction is unknown. The cathedral stands in the center of Cosenza on Piazza Duomo, near Corso Telesio. In 1981 he received the status of the church of the Madonna del peeler, and in 2011, the year - was included in the list of World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
The history of the cathedral marked by numerous renovations and modifications. The first cathedral was built in the Romanesque style, but in June 1184, the year it was destroyed during the terrible earthquake and re-erected only in 1222, the year already by the canons of Cistercian architecture. Then, in the 13th century, it was consecrated in the presence of the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. Interestingly, the architect responsible for the restoration of the cathedral, was Luca Campano, who later became archbishop of Cosenza. In 1748, the year of Santa Maria Assunta underwent another reconstruction - then baroque cathedral acquired traits that hid its original form. Unfortunately, in the course of the renovation of the church disappeared a number of her works of art decorating. In 1831, the year the facade of the cathedral was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style, and in 1886 received a Gothic style and the transept and the choir.
Today, in the cathedral, in the transept, we can see the tomb of Isabella of Aragon, wife of the French King Philip III. Long aisle temple connects it with the Palazzo Archiveskovile, the Archbishop's Palace, which houses painting of Luca Giordano "Immaculate Conception." There you can admire the amazing beauty stavrotekoy donated by Emperor Frederick II in honor of the consecration of the cathedral - it was made in the imperial workshops of jewelry in a mixed Muslim-Byzantine style.
