One of the main shrines of Chios is the monastery of Agia undoubtedly Marcellus. It is located in a small picturesque bay about 8 km from Volissos in the 45-47 km from the capital of the island.

According to legend, Saint Marcellus (patroness of the island of Chios) was born and lived in a small village in the middle of Valissos 14th century .  Her mother was a Christian, while his father was a Gentile .  Despite the fact that the mother of Marcellus died when she was still quite small, laid in early childhood strong Christian foundations of Marcellus strictly observed throughout his life .  When the girl was 18 years old, his father began to show to his daughter sinful desires .  Fearing harassment father Marcellus ran away from home in the mountains and hid in the dense thickets of spiny .  Father found her hiding place and set fire to the bushes hoping to lure fugitive .  Markel rushed to the sea, but his father shot an arrow and wounded a girl .  Realizing that she was not far to go, Marcellus began to pray to the Lord for help .  God heard her prayers, and the rock opened up, swallowing her body .  On the surface, leaving only the head .  Distraught father beheaded his daughter and threw her head into the sea .  It is believed that under that rock to this day the relics of St. Marcellus .  From the cleft in the rock today has a warm source, whose waters are considered medicinal .

In 1500, in honor of the Holy Virgin Martyr Markella monastery was built here, and the door is now open to welcome all comers. At the monastery there are special cells where you can stay for the night. Every year on July 22 in St. Marcellus day thousands of pilgrims from all over the world come here to honor the saint. On this day, throughout the life of the holy spring clouds of steam.

Before the monastery a great stretches of sand and shingle beach. Usually there is not crowded since the beach is not organized, and its crystal-clear waters of the different superfluous cool and deep. Nevertheless, this is a great place for lovers of peace and solitude. At the end of the beach about a 20-minute walk from the monastery and it is the place where it took its martyred Saint Marcellus. Near the holy source was built a small chapel.
