Armol - a small village in a picturesque valley in the southern part of the island of Chios, which existed here in the Middle Ages. However, in contrast to the colorful Pyrgi, Kalamota, location, Olympus and other settlements of Chios, which has survived many beautiful architectural monuments of the Middle Ages, Armol was largely rebuilt. Armol is located about 20 km from the capital city of the island of Chios (Chora) and 2 km from the settlement Kalamota.
Despite the fact that the village is located in the famous Mastikohorii (area long known for plantations mastic tree resin, which is considered to be unique), Armol primarily famous as a center of pottery of Chios. Of course, the locals also engaged in cultivation and mastics, but pottery, secrets that for centuries passed on from generation to generation, and today is a trademark Armol. Original ceramics handmade (vases, pots, cups, plates, ornaments, etc.) you can buy in local shops as a souvenir. You can also visit the fascinating master class on production of ceramics.
At the top of a picturesque hill overlooking Armol, is the main local attraction - the Byzantine fortress Apolihnon. Here, during the rule of the Genoese in the island, located Mastikohorii administration. It is also worth visiting the main church of the settlement - the church of Saint Demetrius and Church of the Virgin Mary, which preserved a magnificent carved iconostasis, dating from 1774 (both churches are located in the central square Armol). Another interesting situated near the Life-Giving Source Armol monastery, built in the late 18th century.
