One of the most visited places in the famous city of Chennai is considered to be a small but elegant Catholic Church Luz, which is officially called the Church of Our Lady of Light, and is one of the oldest churches in the city .  It was created back in 1516, when this area was ruled by the Portuguese colonists .  They built it in honor of the Virgin Mary in thanks for their safe voyage .  According to legend, eight priests went from Lisbon to India aboard a Portuguese nobleman and explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral in 1500 .  They landed in Cochin (now Kochi) and intended to disperse across the country for the preaching of Christianity .  Several priests have decided to sail further south, but lost .  They are quite desperate to get to the ground, but did not cease to pray fervently to the Virgin Mary, and a miracle happened .  As they later told the shore helped them get a mysterious bright light that showed them direction .  People were convinced that she is Mary appeared to him and literally light the way to the bank .  Therefore, a new church and called "Luz", which translated from Portuguese means "light" .

The architecture of this building mixed several styles: in general it is built in a classic European style low-key, but it can be seen and Gothic details, such as arches and baroque ornaments. The main altar on which the statue of the Virgin Mary, decorated with gilt and silvered leaves, and the ceiling of the hall covered with frescoes and paintings, seasoned in the blue-blue tones.
