Basilica of San Tome - a Roman Catholic minor basilica (status acquired in 1956), located in a multimillion Chennai (Madras), in the southern part of the popular Marina Beach today. It was originally built by the Portuguese settlers in the XVI century, in the place where he was buried the apostle Thomas (Thomas). It is believed, but not all scientists hold this view that St. Thomas was the founder of Christianity in India, where he arrived in '52. There he was martyred and buried in what is now Chennai.

Built church was quite small, and eventually became in need of repair. So later, in 1893, it was rebuilt by the British, but as a cathedral. This amazing structure is made in neo-Gothic style and has a dazzling white. The building is decorated with lots of arches, pointed turrets and stained glass. The spire of the cathedral rises more than 47 meters above the city. Inside the building, light enough, but cool.

In addition, on the basis of the cathedral was organized by the museum, which among other exhibits can see the spear, which was killed the apostle. It is also possible to see in the mini-theater at the temple a short film about the life of the saint. The coffin of the Apostle is constantly available for public viewing and attracts pilgrims from around the world.

In 2002 he began an extensive renovation of the cathedral, but in spite of this, access to the remains of the saint was not closed. At the moment, the reconstruction of the temple is completed.
