Military Cemetery of Catania, one of three similar in Sicily, located 7 km south-west from the city of Catania. The other two are located in Syracuse and Ajira. You can get here by the main road from the airport of Catania towards Palermo.
Upon successful completion of the North African campaign in mid May, July 10, 1943 160 thousand soldiers combined Allied forces invaded Sicily for the liberation of the island in the future the whole of Italy from the fascist regime. The Italians, who were preparing to conclude an armistice with the Allies, and to enter the war on their side, were "ostentatious" resistance but German opposition was strong and unyielding. Nevertheless, in August of the same year the Sicilian campaign was completed when two parties allied forces came together at Messina.
Catania at the military cemetery are buried soldiers killed in the last days of the campaign. Many were killed in the fierce fighting near the border town (Catania was released August 5). Equally terrible was the battle for the bridgehead on the river simeto. In total, the cemetery contains the remains of 2,135 Allied soldiers, 113 of which have not yet been identified. Mainly British graves, but you can see the graves of 12 Canadians are buried in 22 pilot who served in the Royal Air Force, and one Polish grave.
Visit the war memorial at any time. Access for pedestrians is always open, but the problem with the litter area and some other forced cemetery managers to restrict access for motorists - 500 meters from the entrance gates have been installed with a barrier.
