The Mosque of Sultan Hassan

The ensemble of the mosque-madrasa of Sultan Hassan is one of the most famous monuments of the Mamluk art. The building is at the square in front of the Citadel. This is a religious and architectural complex consisting of the mausoleum of Sultan, mosques, hospitals and many outbuildings.

Outside, it is perceived as a powerful two-storey block of stone with decorative niches, windows and the two surviving minarets at the corners. High portal, decorated with stalactite vault opens in a narrow corridor that leads into a closed square courtyard. Its walls are cut from four sides pointed arches giant aivans where children are involved, to study theology.
