One of the squares of Burgos is a monument to the Spanish national hero, the legendary knight El Cid Campeador. The present name of the hero, who was born in 1041, was Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar. El Cid was one of the protagonists of wars during the Reconquista, to write a novel about it, he was devoted to the songs of legends and poetry. Who served at the court of original Castilian kings, El Cid famous multiple victories won their battles with Moorish conquerors. Fearless and desperate warrior expelled from the service at King Alfonso of Castile, he fought on the side of the Emir, of the ruling on the territory of Zaragoza, then again sided with the Castilian king. In 1086 he joined the struggle of the Arab emirs of Valencia and soon conquered and subjugated the entire territory of the province, making Valencia a private residence. For the set of victories earned him the nickname El Cid Campeador - Winner.
El Cid monument was made of bronze by sculptor Juan Cristobal Gonzalez in 1933. The monument is a figure of the hero, riding on horseback and pointing forward and his sword drawn in the direction where during his lifetime still dominated by Arab conquerors. The monument is decorated with two engraved inscriptions, one of which praised the courage of the hero and the other states on the date of his death, which was a great loss for the whole Spanish people.
The area on which the monument was renamed in the middle of the last century from the Plaza of San Pablo in the Plaza del Mio Cid - "Area of my Sid."
