On the Plaza de San Juan, located to the northeast of Burgos Cathedral is the ancient church of San Lesmes Abad. The church dedicated to St. Lesmesu, is the patron saint of the city and its inhabitants revered. Lesmes was abbot, who lived in Burgos in the 11th century and founded a monastery once in this place. The temple was built in the Gothic style in the 14th century on the ruins of the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist, were once part of the monastery complex.
The church is a fairly massive, made of a stone building, the most prominent elements are the high bell tower and the main portal. The portal, which was the creator Simon de Colonia, made in the form of a cascade lancet arches decorated with magnificent, finely executed ornamentation. The gates of the portal, with reliefs of episodes of life Abbot Lesmesa were created and installed in 1997 on the occasion of the 900 th anniversary of the saint.
In terms of the church is a three-nave church with a transept. In the main nave near the altar lie the remains of the saint Lesmesa. In the side aisle on the left side is a chapel in which there is an altar dedicated to St. Bartholomew. The altar is a fine example of Spanish Renaissance. In the nave on the right side is placed a magnificent altar of the Holy Cross, created with the participation of artists from Antwerp in the late 15th century and is a true work of art.
Currently, the church of San Lesmes Abad is valid. In one of the church chapels exposition of paintings.
