Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the town of Baklayon 6 km from Tagbilaran is considered one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. In addition, it is one of the best preserved churches built by the Jesuits even though in the 19th century, its façade has been slightly modernized.
The first Spanish missionaries who came from Cebu, Baklayone appeared in 1595, and shortly after that the first chapel was built. However, after several years of fear of attacks by pirates Moro forced the Jesuits to move their mission inland in Loboc. Only in 1717 it was founded in Baklayone parish, and the construction of the church. For the construction were used coral collected at the seashore, and fastened them with egg white. The current church building was completed in 1727, and in 1835 it was added the bell tower. Inside preserved prison that was used to punish locals violate covenants of the Roman Catholic Church.
Next to the church is an old monastery building, which also has a small museum with ancient artifacts pertaining to religion. Some of the exhibits of the museum about 500 years! Among the interesting museums gizmos can note the statue of the crucified Christ, made of ivory statue of the Virgin Mary, which is rumored to be presented to the coming of the Queen Katherine of Aragon, antique gold embroidered robes of the monks, the book with the cover of the Asian buffalo leather, etc.
The church has two facades: the inner is made in the classical style, and exterior, reconstructed in the 19th century, has a portico, decorated with three arches. Gilded altar are the main attraction of the interior - they are a fine example of luxurious baroque, popular in the 18th century. Inside you can also see the organ, installed in the 1800s, but today is in working order.
