Church of the Intercession of the Virgin and St. Alexander Nevsky - that's the full name of the temple, located on the shores of the Gulf of Gascony in Biarritz.

Initially, the Orthodox community in Biarritz was going to service conducted at the Villa Eugenie, which was the summer residence of the French empress and wife of Napoleon III. At present these services Maria Feodorovna, wife of the Russian Emperor Alexander III.

A few years after the death of the French emperor in 1873 Eugenia Villa for sale, which the new owners have turned first to the casino, and then to the hotel. Therefore, the local Orthodox community decided to build a new church, a separate building. The decision was adopted in 1879, set up a special committee, which has been collecting donations and organizational issues.

The project for the church of Alexander Nevsky developed Nikolai Nikonov, one of the most famous architects of St. Petersburg, worked in the field of church architecture. Churches and cathedrals designed by Nikonov, could be seen on Valaam, in Moscow, Novy Afon, Tallinn and other cities and villages in pre-revolutionary Russia.

Construction works have been started in Biarritz in 1890, and two years later the church was consecrated, which was attended by the Russian ambassador in Paris, Baron Arthur Morengeym, Duke George of Leuchtenberg and the authorities of Biarritz.

Currently, the church is active and belongs to the Western European Exarchate of Russian parishes in the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In the 2000s an attempt was made to transfer the church to the Moscow Patriarchate, but it was challenged in court, and the church was returned to the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Russian Orthodox Churches in Western Europe.
