Once in the wall surrounding Berlin, there were 14 gates. Only one survived - the Brandenburg Gate. The gates were built in 1791 by order of the King of Prussia Friedrich Wilhelm II, modeled on the Athenian Propylaea. In 1806, Napoleon ordered removed from the gate quadriga and went to Paris as a war trophy. After 8 years of field marshal Blucher returned the sculpture back.

In the 30s of the twentieth century they have acquired notoriety because of the Nazi marches with torches. After the erection of the Berlin Wall gates, trapped by the German Democratic Republic, became a symbol of the division of Germany. The Brandenburg Gate is now again adorn the restored Quadriga, the Prussian eagle and the iron cross.
