The National Art Museum of Catalonia was formed in 1990 through the merger of the collections belonging to the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Art of Catalonia. The museum is housed in the National Palace (Palau Nacional), which was built for the opening of the first World Exhibition in 1929 and is located at the foot of the mountain of Montjuic.

The museum has a huge collection of works from different fields of art, covering a long period of time .  Here are the collection of Romanesque art, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque .  Romantic Collection, gathered in this museum is the largest in the world .  Here are outstanding works of that time recognized truly unique .  Particularly striking collection of wall paintings - frescoes .  Exposition of the Gothic period of 13-15 centuries is represented by paintings, stone sculptures, carved stone and wood, the amazing stained glass windows .  Renaissance and Baroque periods, are some of the most exciting, but at the same time the most significant art of Catalonia, presents the works of outstanding Spanish, Flemish and Italian artists .  Among them are works by Goya, Velazquez, Rubens, El Greco and others .  The National Museum of Art and exhibited exhibition of contemporary art of the late 19th - early 20th century, which includes paintings, photographs, samples of applied art .  In this exhibition there is a famous painting by Pablo Picasso's "Woman in hat and fur collar" . 

There is also a collection of coins, medals and paper money, as well as a collection of prints and drawings. The museum's art and the universal library, it also caters for restoration work.
