Athens Academy of Sciences has the official status of the National Academy of Greece, it is the highest research establishment in the country. The work of the Academy under the Ministry of Education and Religion of Greece. Athens Academy was founded March 18, 1926. Its name it owes the ancient Plato's Academy, founded in 385 BC and named after the mythical hero of the Academy. The official charter of the academy divides its activities into three areas: science, art, morality, and political science.

The main building of the academy - a masterpiece of neo-classical style, is part of the famous trilogy of Athens University of Athens, together with the name of Capodistria and the National Library of Greece. Construction project belongs to the Danish architect Theophilus von Hansen and found his best masterpiece in Greece.

The building was constructed 28 years. He supervised the work of architect Ernst Ziller. The first stone was laid in 1859, more of the means of philanthropist Simon von Sina (Austrian entrepreneur), but due to the political turmoil in 1864, the construction stopped. Four years later, work was resumed and in 1885 the building was completed. March 20, 1887 the main building was put into operation. Despite the fact that the building was originally meant for the National Academy, in the absence of such, it was transferred numismatic museum. Later, here it is located the Byzantine Museum and the State Archives. March 24, 1926 the building was transferred to the newly established Academy of Athens.

The structure consists of a central part and side wings. In front of the building has two columns with the statues of Apollo and Athena (the famous Greek sculptor Leonidas Drosisa). Also, the entrance you can see two seated statues of Socrates and Plato. The frescoes and decorations are the work of Austrian Christian Graypenkerla.

When the Athenian Academy has 12 research centers, 10 research offices, the library and the Foundation for Biomedical Research.
