Mount Aragats - is the highest mountain in Armenia, it is a remarkable natural monument. Mount Aragats is a solitary extinct volcano. The Central Upland Mountain covers an area of ​​about 820 sq.km.

In prehistoric times volcanic eruption, which was accompanied by a strong explosion destroyed the top of Aragats. Around the crater, which has an irregular shape, the four giant towering peaks: southern - 3879 m, western - 4080 m, north - east and 4090 m - 3916 m.

As a result of the centuries-old work of wind, water, solar and volcanic activity on the slopes of the canyons were formed, the largest of them are gorges Geghovit Ambert and a depth of 500 m and wide ravines and rocky passages tubular-fulturity. ARAGATS its start takes a lot of small and large rivers, including Sevjur and Ambert. In the gorge Geghovit can see three cascading waterfall height of about 100 meters.

The mountain was named after an ancient god of death and resurrection Ara. On its slopes are traces of ancient outbuildings and irrigation networks, as well as amazing architectural monuments of the Middle Ages (Amberd, Dheere).

There is a legend related to Aragats mountain, according to which St. Gregory the Illuminator ascended to its top to pray. At night the way he lit up hanging from the heavens unquenchable lamp. Legend has it that the lamp and now shines at night, but can only see it dedicated.
