In the historic part of Angers in the open air is another interesting attraction of the city - a botanical garden Jardin de Plant, also known as "The Garden of Plants".
It broke in 1740, the founder of the Society of Botany Lyute de la Richelieu. Nearly a half-century society has decided to expand its botanical ownership and bought a piece of land on which stood the abbey church of Saint Serge and through which flows a stream. At its present location Garden "moved" in 1791 at the initiative of the botanist Gabriel de la Merle Boulet. At the end of the XVIII century on the territory of the garden have been held Lessons of Botany.
Today in the garden you can see the building of the Church of the Holy Samson, which is considered the oldest surviving churches in Angers. Date of its construction - 1006. Despite the respectable age of the building, in the XIX century it was adapted for the greenhouse. In 1972, the church received the status of a monument of history.
In 1901, significant damage to the botanical gardens hurricane struck. At the beginning of XX century image of the garden has been recreated and a little about modern landscape architect Edouard Andre. Currently, the garden is an area of about four hectares, on which grows a lot of old and rare trees. Its territory is decorated with statues and fountains, paved walking paths. The Botanical Garden has become home to several species of birds and boasts a rich collection of plants.
In Angers, you can visit the other, no less beautiful, green places - such as the arboretum Gaston Aiyar, located on the outskirts of the city. It is named after the scientist who first plants planted there. The garden was founded in 1863 and today it exceeds the area of seven hectares. On its territory you can see rare plants and many conifers. Open spaces arboretum decorated with sculptures of artist Francois Kasho they were installed here in 2001.
