On the high picturesque hill in Almeria is an ancient defense system - the fortress of Almeria. The name of the fortress - Alcazaba is derived from the Arabic word al-qasbah, signifying fortification of the city walls, located in the city.
Alcazaba was built in the late 10th century under the rule of Abd-ar-Rahman III. This is the largest fortress of the Moorish period of domination in the territory of the Pyrenees. With its location on a hill fortress throughout the time of its existence it remained invulnerable to enemies. In 1477 the fortress was conquered by the Christian King Alfonso VII, but after a while once again been invaded by Arabs. And only in 1489 the fortress finally passed into the power of the Christian royal dynasty.
In the early 20th century, much of the fortress complex of buildings was restored. Today the complex consists of two series of fortified walls, in which you can see the palace, having regard to the shape of a triangle, terraces, orchards. Special attention should be located on the territory of the fortress water system, which consists of a well, a fountain and a water tank and shows visitors the principles of the water supply of the Alcazaba. There are also two museums, the collection of which reveal the history of the fortress.
In 1933 Alcazaba of Almeria was declared a national architectural heritage, and was assigned the status of a national historical and architectural monument.
