Construction of the Cathedral of Almeria was launched in 1522 after a major earthquake that destroyed the city's main temple, which was erected on the site of an old mosque. Today, the city council placed the residence of the diocese.

The building of the cathedral, whose construction was begun on the orders of Diego Fernandez de Vilyalana, built in the late Gothic style. Construction was completed in 1564, it took part the famous Spanish architect Juan de Orey, who brought to the appearance of the building elements characteristic of the Renaissance.

In front of the building there are elements such as towers, battlements and buttresses, which gives the outward appearance of the Cathedral of massiveness and majesty and makes it look like a fortress. Indeed, at one time the cathedral serves as a reliable shelter from the Arab invasions and pirate attacks.

The building of the cathedral has three naves, crossed by a transept, three chapels and cloister. The main facade is decorated with a beautiful portal, made by Juan de Oreem Renaissance. The portal is an arch with columns and niches decorated with reliefs on the theme of King Charles V of victory over the Moors and the labors of Hercules. The sacristy of the temple and the yard arms were also designed by Juan de Oreem. He was the author of the gate, adorning the western facade of the building. In the main chapel is a magnificent retablo Gothic and Baroque, in the creation of which involved a famous Spanish architect Ventura Rodriguez. On the facade of the chapel dedicated to Christ, adorned bas, who later became one of the symbols of the city and represents the sun with a human face and wavy ribbons instead of rays.
